9. The Strengths of a Romero House Worker

The following strengths in Romero workers have proven over the years to be both needed, and immensely valuable in ensuring that our work and our relationships go well:

Wholehearted: This is the opposite of ‘half-hearted’. It means giving ourselves generously, doing what needs done gladly and freely – really being there with our whole hearts.
Flexibility and Initiative: We have to be adaptable since needs often arise without warning: able to move in response to a change in plans without being too thrown off. This is a gift. Workers are encouraged to take initiative at Romero House. Any form of supervision is meant to guide rather than control the work and service of a worker.
Intelligence, Good Judgement and the Ability to Learn New Skills: Workers are given a great deal of responsibility and are encouraged to think through the different challenges they meet. Education is helpful, but we draw on many forms of intelligence at Romero House. Good judgement in dealing with people is essential.
Humble and Generous in Spirit: We do the work that needs doing, not just the stuff we like or the things to which we have been assigned. If the garbage is full, we don’t walk away from it. We see that the grubby and the noble are one.
A Faith Attitude to Our Work and Community: We see ourselves, and others, including all those arriving at Romero house as children of God, and sent by God. This means offering ourselves to all others (not just those we like), seeing all as totally worthy of our time, our listening, our help, our compassion, and our care. We see ourselves as mending the world, as the loving hands of God in the here and now.
Sharing in Community: Our prayer together that opens each workday, our meetings, reflection time, and mini-retreats together, cooking for each other, planning parties and celebrating, and cleaning up after: all of this is the stuff of a life of true companionship and service. We are each committed to doing our part. You will find each of us committed and present.
