| Mexican Human Rights Expert to Visit Toronto
Luis Arriaga, S.J., a Mexican lawyer and director of Centro Prodh for Human Rights in Mexico, will be in Toronto and Ottawa from May 6-11 to discuss the rapidly declining state of human rights observance in Mexico and the possibility that Mexico will be included by the Canadian government in a list of safe countries. With many questions arising about the safety of Mexico and, consequently, of its neighbours, Jesuit Refugee and Migrant Service (JRMS) and Romero House have arranged for his visit. There will be a public talk in Toronto on Monday, May 10th at Regis College at 100 Wellesley Street West entitled “Cry the Beloved Country: Human Rights under Siege in Mexico.” The talk with address the plight of Mexican refugee claimants in Canada and, by implication, Canada/Mexico relations. Mr. Arriaga will also speak at a press conference in Ottawa on Tuesday, May 11th at 10:.30 a.m. before meeting with the Members of Parliament sitting on the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade’s Sub-Committee on Human Rights.

Pilgrimage to El Salvador
In March, 20 members of the Romero House community traveled to El Salvador as part of an international pilgrimage to commemorate the death of Archbishop Oscar Romero. We joined with thousands of Salvadorans and others to honour the life and death of this heroic leader. Below are letters written each night by Mary Jo Leddy and Susan Kohlhepp to those back in Toronto who could not join us.

Thank you very much to Lois Wilson for her delivery of the Howcroft annual lecture this past Wednesday, February 3. In a talk titled \\\\\\\"Jesus and the Senate\\\\\\\", the former Senator and ecumenical leader in Canada shared her experiences of how faith can and should inform our struggles for justice.
